about IKEBANA... 生け花を経験したい人へ

Ikebana is unique with difference places developing their own style of arrangement.

Having lived in the Netherlands for a couple of months and working at a flower shop, I realized that flowers were more closely integrated into people's lifestyle than compared to Japan.  European flowers are treated like "art".　So it has to be beautiful by itself when made as an art piece. 

In contrast, Japanese flower Ikebana gives attention to things other than the flower itself.

Flowers can make a narrow space feel wide.

Flowers can inspire a cool breeze in the hot summer. 

Flowers can express a ceremonial status or a style of party in a venue. 

Flowers can blessed the earth or wind from where the flower was from originally. 

Ikebana is often said that ‘It’s composed of a few flowers’ ‘The beauty of subtraction/minimalism’ ‘arrangement focused on the frame line’. However they are the result of the expression of prior objectives, not the essence of Japanese flowers.  

The place or room where flowers were displayed is very important in the history of Ikebana.

Each style of classic Ikebana which exists currently was established by the architect (for example Cha-shitsu or Tokono-ma) of each era .

In other words, when you know the history of Ikebana you can see the history of each Japanese architect. 

In my ikebana experience, through flowers I will tell you the history of Japanese rooms and Japanese sensibility towards beauty and seasons, not just "how to make ikebana"

生け花が他の国のお花と大きく違うところは、場所とともに発展したことにあります。

少しですがオランダで暮らし、お花屋さんで研修させて頂き、日本よりもずっと花が身近にある暮らしを経験して見て感じたことは、西洋の花の文化は「芸術」であるということ。作品として作り込みそれ単体で美しくあることを求められます。

それに対し、日本の花は、花以外のものに焦点が当たります。

狭い空間を広く感じさせることができる花。

暑い夏に、涼しさを感じさせるような花。

その場所で行われる儀式や宴会のかくを表すような花。

その花が咲いていた場所の、大地や風を感じられるような花。

生け花が「お花を少ししか使わない」「引き算の美」「線を強調した生け方」などと言われることがありますが、それは以上のような目的を表現した結果であり、日本の花の本質にはなりません。中でも、花がいけられた場所や空間は、生け花の歴史においてとても重要です。 現代でも残っている古典生け花の各スタイルは、そのスタイルが確立した時代の建築に基づいて（茶室や床の間など）確立しました。

つまり、生け花の歴史を知れば、日本の空間の歴史が見えてきます。

生け花エクスペリエンスでお伝えしたいことは、花のいけ方ではなく、花を通してみる日本の空間の歴史、日本ならではの美意識、季節感です。
